V3- Thermodynamic System and Properties

What is system, boundary and sorrounding in thermodynamics?

System: The system is defined as a part of the universe that is chosen for the thermodynamic study.

Surrounding: The region outside the system is known as surrounding.

Boundary: The actual or imaginary line which separates the system and surrounding is known as boundary.

What are different types of thermodyanmic system?

There  are three types of thermodynamic system:

1-Open System

2-Closed System

3-Isolated System

An open system can exchange matter and energy

A closed system can exchange energy (e.g. heat) but not matter.

An isolated system cannot exchange energy or matter.

Explain control volume...

Control volume system is basically defined as one fixed area in space upon which the study will be focused and mass or matter will enter in to the system and will leave the system continuously.

Difference between control volume and open system..

The control volume is that part of the system that is under consideration; the part to be modeled. An open system simply means mass can enter and exit the system

What are thermodynamic properties? Explain Types of thermodynamic properties.

Thermodynamic properties are defined as characteristic features of a system capable of specifying the system’s state.

Types of thermodynamic properties

Intensive properties-   Are independent of amount of mass

                       For example- Temperature,Pressure,Density,etc

Extensive Properties-   Varies with the mass

                       For example- Mass,Volume,Energy,Enthalpy,etc

Specific PropertiesAn extensive property expressed per unit mass of system

                       For example- Specific energy,Specific entropy,etc

Molar PropertiesThe ratio of entensive properties to mole number
